I got to spend the evening with Olivia and Rob for their engagement session at Lakeside Park in Dallas, and from the very beginning, the entire experience felt easy in the best way! Fall had just started to show off, so the air carried that subtle crispness that hints at cooler days ahead. Meanwhile, the park itself felt calm and unhurried, which made it the perfect setting for a relaxed session! Instead of feeling staged or overly planned, the evening unfolded naturally.
From the moment they arrived, Olivia and Rob brought such a steady, peaceful energy. We jumped right in and after a little warming up, they started laughing, leaning into each other, and interacting in ways that felt completely natural! Because of that, we were able to focus less on stiff posing and more on capturing who they genuinely are together.
A Classic Start by the Water
To begin, they chose a more polished and timeless outfit combination. Olivia wore a dress that was cream colored and timeless, and Rob’s look complemented hers perfectly without feeling too formal. Together, they struck that balance between elevated and effortless, which paired beautifully with the elegance of Highland Park!
We arrived at the lake first, and instantly the lighting got me so excited! The sun reflected off the water, and created the softest glow behind them. At the same time, the trees began showing hints of gold and muted orange, signaling that fall had officially arrived. Because of that seasonal shift, everything felt warm and inviting.
They decided to pop a bottle of champagne to kick things off, which added such a fun, celebratory element. Of course, opening champagne rarely goes exactly as planned. First, there was the twisting and laughing as they tried to loosen the cork. Then came the sudden pop that startled them both. After that, a few little spills only made them laugh harder. As a result, those unscripted moments became some of my favorites from the entire session.
Rather than freezing them in one spot, we leaned into movement. They clinked glasses and walked along the shoreline. Occasionally, Olivia bumped into Rob playfully, and he pulled her back in close. Meanwhile, the light wrapped around them in the softest way, catching in her hair and reflecting across the water. Altogether, the scene felt joyful, romantic, and completely authentic.
Subtle but memorable moments
After the champagne excitement, we shifted into something quieter. We wandered toward a tree-lined path where the branches filtered the sunlight overhead.
Olivia slipped her hand into Rob’s arm, and he instinctively drew her closer. I had them take a stroll on the sidewalk, and in those subtle interactions, their comfort with each other became even more obvious. A gentle kiss on the cheek. A shared smile that lingered just a second longer. Small gestures like that often tell a deeper story than dramatic poses ever could.
Engagement sessions create space to pause in the middle of busy wedding planning. While timelines and vendor meetings fill their calendars, this hour allowed them to simply exist together and celebrate this fleeting chapter of their love story. The photos from this part of the session feel especially intimate and grounded.
A Casual Outfit Change (and a Special Guest)
Next, we switched things up completely.
Olivia and Rob changed into jeans and white tops, which instantly created a more laid-back vibe. Although their first look felt polished and elegant, this second look reflected their everyday personalities. Because of that contrast, the gallery now carries both sophistication and playfulness.
Right after they changed, Piper joined us.
Their puppy wasted no time making her presence known. At first, she explored the grass with nonstop curiosity. Then, without warning, she jumped up for attention. Instead of trying to control every movement, we embraced the joyful chaos she brought!
Olivia knelt down to pet her while Rob laughed and adjusted the leash. A few moments later, Piper tugged them forward as if she had her own agenda for the evening. As they followed her down the path, they couldn’t stop smiling. Naturally, those spontaneous interactions added so much personality to the photos.
We paused at a bench for a few portraits, and Piper proudly perched between them like she owned the place. After that, we captured walking shots with her trotting happily at their side. Eventually, she even paused long enough for a few still frames where all three looked toward the camera at the same time—an impressive feat for a puppy.
Including Piper made the session feel even more representative of this stage of life. Not only are Olivia and Rob planning a wedding, but they’re also building a home together. In other words, this season isn’t just about engagement—it’s about creating a shared life, complete with puppy energy and all.
Golden Hour Glow
As the sun dipped lower, the entire park transformed once again. The sky softened into pale pinks and warm golds, and a gentle breeze moved through the trees. Because golden hour arrived right on schedule, everything felt cinematic without trying too hard!
We made our way back toward the lake for a few final portraits. This time, however, the energy felt slower and more reflective. Olivia rested her head on Rob’s shoulder, and he wrapped his arm around her waist. Meanwhile, Piper, finally a little worn out, settled briefly at their feet.
Instead of directing every detail, I let them settle into whatever felt natural. As a result, those final frames captured something deeper than excitement alone. They reflected contentment. They reflected anticipation. Most importantly, they reflected partnership.
Why Evenings Like This Matter
By the end of our time together, it didn’t feel like a structured photoshoot at all. Rather, it felt like an evening stroll with two people who genuinely love being around each other. We documented polished moments by the water, quiet interactions under the trees, and playful chaos with Piper. Because each section of the session carried a different energy, the full gallery tells a layered story.
When I look back at their photos, I don’t just see beautiful light or coordinated outfits. Instead, I remember the champagne pop and the way they laughed when it surprised them. I notice how naturally Rob reaches for Olivia’s hand. I smile at the images of Piper mid-jump, completely stealing the spotlight.
The combination of early fall in Highland Park, thoughtful styling, and their authentic connection made everything feel seamless. However, what truly stands out is how comfortable they are together! Since they stayed fully present with each other, the camera simply captured what already existed.
Engagement sessions freeze a chapter that moves quickly. Soon enough, wedding details will take center stage. Before that happens, though, evenings like this allow couples to savor the in-between. And honestly, that’s why I love photographing sessions like Olivia and Rob’s—it’s never just about the pictures. It’s about preserving the laughter, the movement, and the little moments that feel uniquely theirs!
